The Second World War was the worst conflict in human history. It resulted in the destruction of European nations and the deaths of millions of people.
In the summer of 1940, as the Germans invaded France, two young men met on a beach in the south of France. One was a member of the French Resistance, the other an officer in the French Army. Their encounter marked the beginning of a friendship that would last until the end of the war.
It was a peaceful morning in July. I was in the garden, gathering the day’s first herbs and flowers, when I heard a distant rumble. I looked up and saw a black cloud spreading over the sky, then flashes of light and the rumble became a loud roar. There was a crash and a huge explosion.
It was a sunny morning in June and, as I was leaving the house to go to the office, I heard a woman shouting. I was in the street and I looked up. On the roof of a building, three Jews were tied up with a rope. Around them, Nazi soldiers were laughing and pointing.
